Getting Connected To The Right Gateway

Chinapay wants to ensure you the merchant receive exactly what you need and signed up for. This section of the website is to inform those who are further curious about the sleeping giants’ e-commerce habits and how being connected to the largest debit card organization in China can out perform even major Credit Cards payment organizations.

What is Union pay?

A Government appointed authority on payment. When it comes down to Chinese affairs it is always best to be supported and behind the government. Being aligned with a government supported industry has far reaching stability and endurance.

China UnionPay (Chinese: 中国银联; pinyin: Zhōngguó Yínlián), also known as UnionPay (Chinese: 银联; pinyin: Yínlián) or by its abbreviation, CUP, is the only domestic bank card organization in the People's Republic of China (PRC).
Founded in March 2002, China UnionPay is an association for China's banking card industry, operating under the approval of the People's Bank of China (PBOC, central bank of China). It is also the only interbank network in China excluding Hong Kong and Macau, linking the ATMs of some fourteen major banks and many more smaller banks throughout mainland China. It is also an EFTPOS (Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale) network.

What does that mean for an International merchant?

By connecting with Chinapay you will be integrated with scores of interfaces of banks and networks; you don’t need to get connection with each of them one by one. This for International Merchants is an expensive and chaotic procedure, a next to impossible feat for a small Merchant to achieve even to connect with a single Chinese Bank. We connect you with over 204 banking institutions and their countless branches all over China.

Chinapay saves you the cost of development and maintenance; you don’t need to invest and lock down investment capital or allocate precious man power. We are providing you the fully equipped electronic payment solution and the entire connected network.

What about Credit Cards?

The sad truth is that Credit cards do not actually exist in China. Credit Cards are only an Union Pay Card that have a “post-paid” function and where the payment even for Credit Cards are processed by Union pay.

Currently in China, most individuals do not have a Credit Card nor really did need one as Union pay system allows them to purchase and use their debit cards for almost every payment function required.

As a reference, even Shanghai with the highest credit card transaction use has only 500k point of sale terminals. This is roughly the equivalency of a 20% penetration if it is compared to western cities of the same size.

By the end of the first quarter of 2009, about 1,888,374,100 (1.89 billion) bank cards had been issued in China. Of these cards, 1,737,901,000 (1.74 billion) or 92% were debit cards, while the rest (150,473,100, or 150.5 million) were credit cards. In 2010 China had over 2.4 billion bankcards in circulation growing approximately 16% . A Snapshot of China's Credit and Debit Card Markets
